Charles is a Citizen Researcher and a Community Liaison within the department of Neurology at URMC; he works to improve community engagement, education, patient care, and wellness. Charles is also a Neuropalliative Care Champion and a Community Patient Representative, working with the COVID Vaccine Advisory Committee (CVAC) and with UR-NEXT (URMC’s node of the NIH’s Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials, or NeuroNEXT, which was created to conduct studies of treatments for neurological diseases through partnerships with academia, private foundations, and industry). Originally from Philadelphia, PA., Charles moved to Rochester, NY in 2010. In more recent years, he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis - which has deepened his personal connection to, and understanding of, neurologic diseases. Golisano Children’s Hospital Artist in Residence, Charmaine Wheatley met Charles at a Neurology department meeting and soon thereafter painted this portrait of him over zoom.
